What: Gigantor box of Q-Tips.
Origin: Economy sized cosmetic, hygienic, and cleaning ambitions.
How long kept: A good long time.
Last used: Yesterday, when I realized that there were about 30 Q-tips left a box that occupied a large swath of real estate in my bathroom cabinet.
Why kept: They Might Be Useful.
Destination: Remaining Q-tips, to a smaller container; cardboard parts of the box; plastic parts of the box, sadly, trash.
Confession: This post was inspired by one of the Organizing Goddess' blog posts about the fate of another large box of Q-tips her mom had purchased. I may have laughed out loud when I read it, my memory fuzzy that I was in almost exactly the same boat as her mom.
She and "M" would agree: sometimes "economy sized" is not the economic or practical choice.

Beyond repair
What. Favorite sunglasses
Last used: last weekend. I tried to wear them on Tuesday morning and there was a scratch right in the wrong place
Why kept: well, they were only kept a few days so I don't think that is too bad. They are a bit sticky (see confession) and I thought maybe I could fix them. Probably not so... Gone!
Destination: recycle bin (I figure they are plastic, therefore recyclable)
Confession: I have replaced these so does that break a rule? I don't think so because I've ridded (is that a word?) my house of something extraneous. My $14.99 Foster Grants are more fashionable I think. I'll try to add a photo
Who is that behind those Foster Grants

Not-Holders (Any More)
What: 3 fraying and of the last century potholders.
Origin: The desire to hold pots.
Last used: In August.
How long kept: Probably since 1994-ish?
Why kept: Why, They're Perfectly Good. (And a bit Out of Sight, Out of Mind, as often as I cook.)
Destination: Textile recycling.
Confession: As a lower Manhattan resident, I thought a lot about what to post...if anything...today. But I realized that today of all days was a good day to let go, so I searched my memory for something I still owned that I actually purchased at the WTC.
Nostalgia. The kind of weird and actually in this moment funny kind. Perhaps inappropriately so. It's complicated. Sticky.
These babies came from Lechter's, which was on the street level of what I think was 3 WTC, near the Vesey Street exit. Lechters had closed that store maybe in 2000, and the chain had gone bankrupt at some point in 2001.
Confession, part deux: There's another black one. I hope it's in the laundry, otherwise, I'll have to give myself an "Aaargh." When it turns up, it's gone, too.
Confession, cont: The other thing I'm thinking of blogging is my neighborhood, which I've loved since I started working here in 1990; I moved here in 1994. All kinds of change upon change has been at times challenging, but (mostly) manageable. But the passion and anger around the site seems only to become worse as time goes on.
We all used to talk about finding the "new normal". Today, people who don't live here make careers by stirring others up...and actually shape the neighborhood itself. It doesn't look like that's going away. Sigh.
Addendum: On a positive note, I'm going to get my sewing machine out -- right now -- and make myself some new potholders.
Update:
Thanks, Craftzine, for the instructions (which I didn't follow to the T). Great for converting stuff from my fabric stash into something useful. Both my sis "K" (who lurks here sometimes) and my sis-in-law "W" (who I don't think does) might recognize some of the fabric I used, since they were the generous donors.

And I'm Graduating Again
What: Red Wine Vinegar.
Origin: Vinaigrette ambitions.
How long kept: Vintage unknown. Possibly of the last century. See confession.
Why kept: Salad ambitions, It Might Be Useful. Out of Sight Out of Mind, a little bit.
Destination: Bottle, recycling. Contents, glug, glug, glug...down the drain.
Confession: This one took me back to high school and college chemistry, and the word "precipitate". There was so much flaky sediment in the bottle that it looked like an experiment. Ugh.
Confession, part deux: I discovered this when I was actually cooking. I used balsamic instead.
Rumination: I almost didn't post this. Why? Because I actually think I've graduated to the stage where tossing stuff like this is ordinary maintenance/garbage. Thus it would no longer be eligible for blogging under The Rules, any more than the 1/3 of a zucchini that I found languishing in my crisper drawer upon my return from vacation. Yikes.
(And in fact, I'm contemplating cabinet and fridge reviews on the first of each month, so that I can avoid ever finding something this old and unused/unusable in my cupboard. Ever again.)
Rumination, part deux: Why are these bottles so flippin' big? How much salad would I have to eat to use the standard size bottle of red wine vinegar in a year? (Personally, I don't do lot of raw veggies...my chiropractor, who has some grounding in Chinese medicine, recommended that I stick with lightly cooked.)

Paper cubed
What: cube of paper
Last used: oh a few months ago
Why kept: might be useful and out of site
Destination: to The Boys school. The director mentioned that she needed note paper and I had this as extra. I also gave another one that I had at work to my officemate
I love paper and pens. I love going to office supply stores. I've been good and not buying things for myself when I visit them :)

I'm Graduating
What: Alumni "resource guide" for my undergraduate institution. From 2004.
Origin: Someone else's fund raising agenda.
How long kept: 6+ years
Why kept: It Might Be Useful. (In some alternate universe.) See confession.
Destination: Recycling.
Confession: I found this in a file with the facebook from grad school, which I needed to check for a name yesterday. Frankly, I don't even know what kind of "resources" this guide contained. Files, when not regularly pruned, start to serve as mini storage boxes.

"S" is for Sister
What: Fun mystery novels.
Origin: Airplane reading.
How long kept: Uh, probably 10+ years. I believe that one of these was passed along to me for the flight back from an Asia trip, by a fellow traveler who had read it on the way over. That would have been 1999.
Usage: Yes, but not in this century.
Why kept: Out of Sight, Out of Mind. And, I might find myself without reading matter and thus Might Need It.
Destination: To "M". She mentioned having been up with The Kid in the middle of the night one night, reading another fun Sue Grafton tale, "G" is for Gumshoe. I was going be visiting "M" a few days hence, and I asked her if she wanted them. She did. (And she knows that she can Freecycle them or drop them at the library when she's done.)
Confession: I also gave "M" a bottle of Off Botanical, one of the fruits of the insect repellent purge. It looks significantly less toxic than some of the more repellent repellents, and I invite her to dispose of it if it's too toxic for The Boy and The Kid.
Bonus: On the ride to the airport for my trip back to NYC, my dad and I stopped at the public library in my folks' Chicagoland community. We dropped a good sized shopping bag of unloved books for their book sale/giveaway room. Way to go, Mom and Dad! (Not just the books, but now that my shopping bag stash is gone, look out friends and family: your shopping bags are not safe around me!)
My dad and I also removed a couple of good sized empty boxes out of his attic. Destination: recycling.

Scents of Summers Past, and Passing
WTH!? Expired Sunblock.
Origin: Various. One of them was an SPF 4, left behind by a former in-law who was a tanner.
Last Used: Ugh, who knows. See confession.
Why kept: Mostly Out of Sight, Out of Mind. They Might Be Useful (in future summers.)
Destination: Down the drain with the contents, bottles to recycling. (I'm in suburban Chicago, where this stuff actually gets recycled...)
Confession: Note the expiration dates. Ack. I'm sure that the sunblock that expired in 99 has been used in this century.
Confession, part deux: It smelled so good going down the drain. Umm, Coppertone. Nostalgia. The good kind.
Confession, part trois: I found a sunscreen in my mom's medicine chest that expired in 2007. I asked her if we could blog this one, too. (Not pictured, and I guess it doesn't really count.)
Conclusion: I believe that this is the end of all extraneous sunscreens that could possibly exist in the 'verse of this blog. I have a couple in current rotation, for various uses. And lesson learned, again. The large size is never a bargain, there's always some left when it expires.

Laboring No More
What: Retired bras.
Origin: Desire to use modern engineering to defy gravity.
How long kept/usage: Various, see confession.
Why kept: I Might Need Them. They Might Be Useful. And Out of Sight, Out of Mind.
Destination: Mostly textile recycling.
Confession: In the great closet purge, I emptied out each drawer. In a corner of my lingerie drawer, I found a tiny pile of suspiciously organic looking shreds, each not much wider than a hair and maybe one millimeter long.
Eew.
After totally grossing out, and cleaning out the drawer and trying to forget...I decided to try on all of the bras to see which ones to delete from my collection. Well, the 30 year old strapless bra shed more of these suspicious little shreds. The weird shreddy stuff was the elastic on this bra, a bra I haven't worn since the late 80s. Heaven only knows when it last fit.
Aargh.
Confession, part deux: At least one of these never fit, I may have worn it once. It was embarrassingly expensive. I gave that one to Housing Works. Is that wrong?

Regifted To Regift
What: Pine cone shaped candles.
Origin: Gift. See confession.
Usage/How long kept: Hmmm. These unopened candles were given to me in the early part of this century.
Why kept: I might burn then, and thus They Might Be Useful. Also, Out of Sight, Out of Mind. They Were A Gift From...
Destination: To my sister-in-law and brother, for them to give as a hostess gift.
Confession: I can't remember who gave these to me. Hopefully not the family members who received the hostess gift. (And who hopefully can find the humor in this one, in the unlikely event that they happen across this blog.) And hopefully not my sis-in-law and brother!
Confession part deux: Stay tuned for more candles. Sigh.

Container Shipped (To Goodwill)
What: Fantastic plastic container.
Origin: Not quite sure. I'm not even sure if it's mine (oops!), though I'm surely paying to store it.
Usage/how long kept: It looks pretty darn new, and I don't know that this was ever used; it has been around for 5-6 years. Minimum.
Why kept: Out of Sight, Out of Mind...in a cabinet that isn't opened too often.
Destination: Goodwill.

It's Repellent!
What: Manly insect repellent. (More power!)
Origin: Most likely my brother's canoe trip in a part of the country where the biting insects are so populous at certain times of year that people wear net suits (almost a beekeeper look) just to canoe and camp. I'm talking science fiction stuff, like that episode of the X-Files that took place at a remote logging camp in the Northerly climes. My now-sis-in-law played Scully on the canoe trip, it wasn't all men all the time.
How long kept: Years. Several. (2004?)
Why kept: It Might Be Useful. And Out of Sight, Out of Mind...these were in a cabinet that doesn't get accessed so often.
Usage: Never, by me. I'm more of an earthy citronella kind of girl.
Destination: My uncle, who probably only wishes that we could give him a repellent that's either 100% DEET, if not full on DDT.
Confession: There were several other types of insect repellent. Citronella: expired, and tossed. (Bottle recycled.) Several varieties of Off and it's non-earthy relatives:palmed off given to other family members.
Photo snagged from the Wikipedia page for one of my favorite X-Files episodes, Darkness Falls.

Pursing My Lips
What: Several coin purses.
Origin: Various, but I think that they were all gifts.
How long kept/usage: Hmmm. I remember using one of them, a gift from a friend who made a trip to Italy in the early 90s. Others are question marks.
Why kept: Out of Sight, Out of Mind. See confession.
Destination: One for each of my oldest nephews. (The younger nephew and niece are too little to do much but chew on these.)
Confession: This is the sort of thing I remember my uncles giving to me when I was little. That stuff always seemed so cool! I still have a neat, round plastic box with a screwcap that's got a few marbles in it. I think that my Uncle "D" gave that to me. Nostalgia. The good kind.
Hopefully their parents will see these gifts, which I view as pretty disposable, the same light. (We'll let "M" be the judge.)
Confession, cont: I've got a lot of small stuff squirreled away in, you guessed it, storage boxes. The art quilters at my quilt shop would call a lot of it "ephemera". (The kata, or ceremonial silk scarf, from a dinner that marked the 50th anniversary of Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hilary's successful ascent and descent of Mount Everest? That would have been 2003. Got it.) I actually like some of this stuff.
Nostalgia. Also the good kind.
The turquoise and purple coin purse shaped like a cat. WTH? (Sorry, mom, if you gave this to me. But not so much.)

They don't suck
What: some pacifiers and miscellany including a gift card from Marshall Fields
Why kept: The Kid used them for awhile but doesn't anymore. The gift card was from a wedding gift about 6 years ago. It was in a box that housed response cards from the wedding that had nice notes on it. Those are sticky and are refiled elsewhere, I digress.
Destination: trash.

Sticky and sweet
What: samoa girl scout cookies. Three of them from an open box
How long kept: they came into the house in March. I opened them in late july and should have tossed them much sooner than a few weeks ago (I save this one for a rainy day)
Why kept: I might eat them. But they aren't as tasty or as good of quality as the other GS maker "caramel delites". They were grainy and stale
Destination: I can't remember if I composted or tossed. The packaging was recycled

Candle in the wind returns!
Sorry for the delay... We've had a stomach bug in our house ugh
What: candle from a wedding. It was the favor from my friend "F"s wedding
Why kept: sticky. I love candles but I don't burn them much with little ones around
How long kept: she celebrated her 1st anniversary in May this year.
Last used: well I just dusted it today (in preparation) but it's never been burned
Destination: I called "F" and told her that I love the candle, don't be offended, but do you want it? She was so excited because she wasn't able to keep one for herself! Yay!!! That made me happy and her happy. AND another item out of the house win-win-win!!!

Green Cred
What: Well aged cloth napkins.
Origin: I broke up with most household paper products in the early 90s. (About when I bought these...)
Last used: Within the last couple of weeks. See confession.
Why kept: They're Perfectly Good. Kind of. See confession.
Destination: Textile recycling of some ilk, see confession.
Confession: Casual cloth napkins weren't so easy to find in the early 90s, and I recall scoring these on deep discount in a mail order catalogue, back before it seemed possible to stem the flow of that time suck! I loved them, many of which are now too stained and/or worn to be put out for guests.
When I left on vacation, I put these in my suitcase. (Thus they are out of my house, albeit still in the bottom of my suitcase at this moment.) My thought was to repurpose them into something else...we'll see what happens to them in the next few days.
(I feel the siren's call of the tote bag, along with the possibility of Good Crafting Intentions that could go either way. It's either that, or off to textile recycling somewhere in the Midwest. They will not be toted back to NYC.)

Face This
What: Clock.
Origin: Gift from a former business associate.
How long kept/Usage: Uh, since 1997? And it may have sat out on my desk at our office for a time.
Why kept: It Was A Gift From X. Guilt. (X and his wife are still friends. But not likely readers of this blog, whew.) And Out of Sight, Out of Mind, it was on the top shelf of my kitchen cabinets -- I have to get out the ladder to haul myself up there.
Destination: Housing Works.
Confession: No Housing Works guilt over this one, I did check eBay and people are selling these, but the price didn't add up to enough to compensation for the transaction cost, and worry about getting it there in one piece...the HW drop was friction free. (Unlike most of my other HW donations, I did fill out a little donation form for this one.)

Stuffing, You're Leaving
What: Some kind of polyfill stuffing, about enough to fill a shoebox.
Origin: I think that I got this from "M", or my mom. See Confession.
Last used/How Long Kept: Hmm. I might have stuffed the spider with this, that was last summer? Maybe the summer before. And I'm not sure how long I had the darn stuff, but not too much longer than that.
Why kept: Of course, It Might Be Useful if I were to make any stuffed toys for my nephews or niece. And it was in my fabric stash, where I came across it rarely, so Out Of Sight, Out of Mind.
Destination: Textile Recycling.
Confession: I probably toted this stuff back from Chicagoland to NYC. Aargh. And I've actually stuffed things with shredded pantyhose and old t-shirts, so I don't really "need" it.

Bag This
What: Yoga students will recognize these as "eye bags". For the uninitiated, they're silk bags filled with flax seeds. When placed across the eyes, this little bit of weight can release a lot of holding from tension.
Origin: I'm pretty sure that this is the last leftover from a business I helped to run in the early 00s.
How long kept/Usage: Since we closed the business in late 2004, and not at all. (Though I actually had more, which I gave away to some students in 2006 or so.
Why kept: Storage Boxes Are Evil. I had these in a small storage box with other yoga-related supplies. So they were Out of Sight, Out of Mind.
Destination: Donated, dropped off at a place where I teach.
Confession: One reason these survived earlier purges was because they're so small. The box I had them in was not much larger than a shoebox. Unlike other larger and less seemingly useful items from this business that I wound up with. Storage Boxes Are Truly Evil.

Time Warp
What: WTH? How is this possible: skin care product, expired summer of 2009.
Origin: I actually think I was on a business (or other?) trip and found myself without my usual hand cream.
Why kept: I Might Need It. It Might Be Useful. And clearly, in plain daily sight in one of my medicine cabinets, but effectively Out of Sight, Out of Mind.
Destination: Landfill. With my apologies.
Comment: I also tossed a couple of mascaras. Though I'm not big on cosmetics, I do usually make an attempt when I'm going to visit with a client or prospective client -- but there's basically no chance that I'll ever use up any of these sorts of products. For safety, as well as a more clutter free medicine cabinet, I've decided that these will get tossed semi-annually...and at that time, I should probably also check the skin care products for expiration dates, too...
(Stay tuned for what I believe will be yet another installment of sun care products.)

This One's A Handful
What: A bunch of low-end gloves, some including holes in the fingertips.
Origin: Not so green desire for convenience and disposability.
How long kept: Uh, 6-7 years?
Why kept: Might Be Useful.
Destination: Textile recycling.
Confession: Burned by the loss of an expensive glove a few years back, I got a bunch of these in a package at Target for a couple of dollars, when I was thinking a bit less about the sustainability of this sort of thing.
A couple of years ago, I made a stuffed spider toy for one of my nephews out of a couple of these. This did enter my thought process momentarily (Good Crafting Intentions (Almost) Gone Bad) before I decided to let these go.
Confession, part deux: I had a Moment in the Brooklyn Target earlier this summer, when I made a last minute purchase of something it turned out I didn't need. (Stay tuned.) For a second, all of the merchandise and shoppers appeared to me as a flickering sea of human suffering -- plastic crap and lost American jobs. (We basically have no textile industry any more. Is this good?)
I'm not usually such a downer. (Sorry about that.) But I do want to make better choices in what I decide to acquire and keep.

Trashed
What: Damaged Vintage cocktail-themed ice bucket. (Really.)
Origin: "Hello, name is "A", and I'm a garage-sale-aholic." (I've been in recovery for a good 15 years, see confession.)
How long kept: Geez, I would guess since the late 80s?
Usage: Never. Other than moving it closer and closer to the exit door of my apartment over the past months.
Why kept: I Might Fix It. (And then It Would Be Cool/Vintage and Someone Might Need It.)
Destination: Good Old NYC Landfill. (Gulp. Sorry.)
Confession: The extent of this baby's damage was not trivial. It's brass cover was banged up and dented. The handle had fallen off. The entire thing, which was largely vinyl, was kind of squashed. (Viewed from above, it appeared to be slightly oval shaped, which meant that the round cover would not ever fit on it again. Even if fixed.)
Aargh.
Confession, part deux: I still love a good garage sale. But I rarely buy anything. Though I'm still a sucker for vintage embroidered linens and those gaily printed flowered tablecloths from the 40s and beyond. ("M" got me a very Christmas embroidered tablecloth and napkin set at the Freecycle Free Meet.)
Aargh.
Confession, part trois: Broken stuff. "Potential" is a theme in Randy Frost and Gail Skeketee's book about hoarding, Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things.
People who truly have an issue with hoarding keep stuff because they see potential that the rest of us might not see.
I'm not a hoarder, clinically speaking. But "potential" is embedded in many of the reasons that I have held onto stuff -- and nowhere as inexplicably as with broken stuff. Clothing that might be mended, and wearable by "someone", check. (Now dispatched to textile recycling. Whew.)
Thanks to eBay, I've seen how little most of my Cool/Vintage stuff that's in mint condition is worth.* So while this was a bit Sticky, and it took a bit of time, it went down the trash chute the day before I left on vacation.
Broken stuff, begone.
(*A clock I bought for a dollar in the 80s may be the exception to this rule. Stay tuned.)

Last used: it's been ahwile. Over a year

Artful Dodger
What: Art book.
Origin: The book was written by an acquaintance, a friend of a then-close friend.
How long kept: Probably 15 years.
Why kept: Mostly Out of Sight, Out of Mind, in plain sight on my bookshelf. The book is also gorgeous, and on a topic of growing interest. See confession.
Destination: Housing Works.
Confession: When examining this book, I realized that I felt a bit bossed into buying it. Nostalgia, and not the good kind. I confess that I listed this first edition book on Amazon to see if it might sell. (Like another one that surprised me.) But it didn't.
(Which reminds me, I'd better make sure I took that listing down. D'oh.)
That said, I'll have no Housing Works guilt about this book. They have a gorgeous store over on Crosby, and I imagine that this book might land there, rather than joining the popular fiction on sale at my local shop. And someone will definitely enjoy this book.
I'll enjoy it being gone.

The Last Shopping Bag
What: The last shopping bag in my apartment. (See confession.)
Origin: Addiction to beautiful paper products. Desire to tote stuff around.
How long kept/Usage: Uh, 4-5 months? And not at all.
Why Kept: It Might Be Useful. (See confession.)
Destination: Housing Works, containing a few items...
Confession: There are a couple of gift bags remaining in a separate stash, but they seem like they shouldn't count as shopping bags. And one very pretty bag from the MOMA Matisse exhibition in the 90s (?) that seems to require a more respectful dispensation.
And I confess that the beautiful folds, combined with design elements, made me think of hacking this bag up and making it into a birthday card for someone in my life named "Kate". Good Crafting Intentions Gone Bad. Almost.

Cue Sound Effects (Psycho)
What: Chef's knife.
Origin: Purchased back in the day. Yes, at one point I actually entertained the idea of actually learning to cook. (An idea that I've recently taken up again, for the moment only in my mind.)
How long kept/usage: This knife was supplanted by an upgrade, a gift from my mom. I haven't used this one in a while, other than to move it around in my kitchen drawer.
Why kept: It Might Be Useful! I Might Need It! And of course, It's Perfectly Good.
Destination: Housing Works.
Confession: I have a very nice memory of buying this knife in the summer of 1984, shortly after moving into my first apartment. For some reason, I was shopping with a boy I had gone to college with, "D." Nice guy, but we were never close, so I have no idea why we would have made a trip together to the Crate and Barrel on the North Side of Chicago. (Maybe we were both moving into apartments? I had a car, so might have offered him a ride.) I remember trying several knives to see which one was comfortable to use. All joking about my cooking skills aside, this knife saw some good use, and hopefully will be useful to someone.

Shirt Tales
What: New, unworn, and fairly classic blouse.
Origin: An unfortunate, ill-considered purchase I made for a
destination wedding in spring, 2001.
How long kept/usage: See above, see confession.
Why kept: Because one day, it might actually look good on me? And
Out of Sight, Out Of Mind in the old closet.
Destination: Dropped this with a friend.
Confession: Does trying this on annually to see if it will ever look
good on me count as usage? I didn't think so. This will look great
on another friend, her sister, who is visiting this weekend. She saw
the photo and approved, so I didn't dump it on them! If she doesn't

Because I Like It
I was talking to my mom yesterday about why we keep stuff, and she raised the reason, "Because I Like It."
Good point.
Lisa from Cheap Bohemian recently posted about something she kept. She really gets to a point at the heart of our project -- to release ourselves from the bondage of stuff we don't want or need, in order to really enjoy the stuff we enjoy.
(A problem of privilege, I totally get it. And there's more to be said on that.)
"Because I Like It" is not one of our reasons here, because we're keeping stuff we like. (I will say that so far, I've had only one or two pangs of not-even regret about stuff that is gone.)
And I'll also say, "Go, Lisa!"
(And, how much do I heart flickr? Photo: Water Joy, by PeterJot used under Creative Commons License. Thanks, Piotr.)

Skirting the Issue
What: Sweet sari-inspired silk wrap skirt.
Origin: Bitch & Swap. (Should Have Said No.)
How long kept/usage: Almost a year; never worn.
Why kept: Good Crafting Intentions Gone Bad. See Confession.
Destination: Vietnam Vets clothing donation.
Confession: I took this brand-new, never-worn, undamaged skirt from the Bitch & Swap because I liked the fabric, and because of its construction -- essentially two long rectangles of fabric sewn together. My intention was to use sewing magic to remix it into something new. Since then, I've pulled it out of the stash several times, "auditioning" it for various projects, and coming quite close recently: I had it on the cutting board with the rotary cutter inches from the fabric. And when I realized that I didn't really like the color for this project, I also realized that I didn't want to cut up this skirt. After all, It's Perfectly Good.
Confession, part deux: I'm traveling for a bit, so some of what you see will be "real time" releases, others are in fact already gone, "banked" for vacation time! (An acceptable transgression of The Rules.) So on my way out the door, I actually stuck this skirt in my suitcase, and it will be released in a location that is not lower Manhattan!

Why kept: the photo is sticky and nostalgic. I love this photo but have no plans to display it. The box is useful
Destination: the photo I mailed to my friend in hopes that it will bring her the same fond memories of that beautiful day senior year in front of her house. The box has a SCHOTT glass in it and is traveling to a collector that saw it on our blog.

For The Absolut Collector -- Absolut-ly Not Me
What: An Absolut Vodka promotion, a knitted cover for an Absolut vodka bottle, designed by Cynthia Rowley, never opened and still in its original package.
Origin: Home delivery of the NY Times in December, 2001.
Why kept: While bizarre, I thought it was kind of cool. And at that time, I wasn't really processing much...I stuck it neatly on a bookshelf, with the vague thought that someday, someone might want it. It Might Be Useful? And definitely Out of Sight, Out of Mind.
Destination: eBay, via "M", see confession.
Confession: I found this on the bookshelf due to this project, in one of my periodic book purges. I googled it, not realizing that there is a universe of people who collect the Absolut promos. It turns out that there is quite a trade in these items, some of which are selling for hundreds of dollars.
Gulp. It Might Be Worth Something, If I Could Find A Buyer! "M"s the eBay maven, and she posted it the other day. (We have 23 watchers and requests coming in from Europe. I'm not making this up.)
It has already left my house, though...as I'm going to be out of town when the auction ends, it's en route to "M" via USPS priority mail (insured), along with another Absolut holiday promo from another year. (We'll post that one later!)

August 21 Update: Bidding is heating up.

An A-Ha moment
Looking in a storage basket (yes, they are as evil as storage boxes), I found some "Real Simple" magazines from last year. I've probably only had them 6 months as Mom shares them with me and I usually pass the on to my friend "L". But in this moment I thought, "hey I'd like to read this cool articles on organization and decluttlering and plain old simplifying my life.". Then my other self said, " really, now....come ON!"
I thought, "yes! Nice short articles! I'll put them in the stroller to read while at the park."
"Oh with the other one you have not finished yet?" Chided my other self
"Oh you saw that?" I replied.
"A-yup! I see everything!!!!"
"Should I save them for "L" or recycle?" I asked, giving in.
"Really!?!" Other self asked, purely frustrated with me
"Recycle, huh?"
"Ya' think?"
Lol. Okay my other self isn't that snide but... It probably made for more interesting reading. And the magazines are in the recycle bin!

Let's stick a pin in this (Bolt movie reference)
What: safety pins and a purloined toy from Grammy's house
How long kept: the safety pins - since May? And the toy since last month
Last used: I found pins in the clean up fray yesterday and I put them in the borrowed bag of pins. The toy was chased around the house by the Kid
Dest: back to Grammy house along with grandpa's hat he left @ our brother's house

New Freecycle Strategy
What: Book. (Along with the almost last bag from the shopping bag stash.)
Origin: It's a prior book club selection.
How long kept: Since we read this, late last summer? Or last fall.
Why kept: When I organized my book shelves, this was one of the book club books I decided to keep. So, kind of Out of Sight, Out of Mind. And I might re-read it, so It Might Be Useful.
Destination: Freecycle.
New strategy: I don't usually troll the NYC Freecycle group, but decided to look at it last night. There was a "wanted" post specifically requesting this book, and I thought, hmmm, and decided to respond.
Well, it's gone! Thanks, Robyn. Freecycle-friction free!
And I'm going back in my mind over other extras I've got, for example yoga mats. I've seen posts for those.
In the past, I've limited my Freecycle activity to making "offer" posts, with reasonably good success. Responding to a "wanted" post seemed to go much more smoothly than making an offer. So I'm definitely going to experiment with checking Freecycle once a week or so for "wanted" posts matching my extras.
(Stay tuned for analysis on whether there's less Freecycle Drama on this side of the transaction!)
Bonus: I only have one shopping bag left. Even the ancient Duane Reade shopping bag that used to contain the stash? Gone. Shopping bag-arama!

Oh's bro
In HS we had some nick names for people and I must have sent this to "A" who in return sent it back to make me laff! It did. When I found it again, I laffed some more. Then I took it to the recycle bin :).
Why kept: nostalgia (mostly the good kind -- some drama. It was High school and I was a teenage girl) and it was sticky
I've unstuck myself of several things today! Woot!

The Hubby guest post: I'll take a belt of that
Or not
What: three belts
Why: they might fit again or he might fix them
Destination: garbage. I can't find a textile recycler around here
