  1. Hi Declutter365,

Cute idea for a blog, I like it! I'll take that SCHOTT glass off your hands, if you'd like. Let me tell you a little about it, first.

SCHOTT is a glass technologies company that began in Jena, Germany in 1884. Back then, Otto Schott had an idea that you could make glass with very specific ingredients to achieve a very specific end result. Up to this point, it seems that most glassmaking was a much more lax, a "40 parts of this, 20 parts of that, and voila! glass" sort of thing. Otto came up with formulae for making glas with certain properties, like heat resistance.

He made a lot of money making heat-resistant glass chimneys for the then-fashionable gas lights indoors. When those were replaced by hotter electric lights, he made the glass for those lights, too. His company grew and expanded into other areas, including optics (lenses for microscopes, eyeglasses, etc).

There are stories (probably apocryphal) that Otto and his company made small drinking glasses for nightcaps or apperetifs. These caught on, and people in the area started asking for a "schott glass" of liquor at their local watering hole. When the practice spread to the English-speaking world, the term became "shot glass." Again, I'm no historian so I can't confirm or deny this.

This is why, today, the SCHOTT company gives away shot glasses at trade shows. We've been doing it for many years, and we try to change the design, color, etc every year. Some of our customers work hard to collect each year's edition.

Like I said, I'll take it off your hands if you want to get rid of it!

    Cheers,

  2. This will not be going to the Free For All. I'm going to ship it to Mr. Kraft. He mentioned that he will be the only one on his floor with this coveted Schott glass! I love the history of the glass... almost makes me want to keep it LOL Hmmm might be worth something. (Just kidding Mr. Kraft) I'll ship this out next week

  3. That's awesome. And Mr. Kraft, Schott has a great resource in you! Telling the story of your company via social media? Great job, my friend. (The airlines could surely use someone of your talents. But I digress.)

("M", maybe you'll get a chance to meet him at a future trade show!)
