Something to sink your teeth in (Friday post)

What: denture cleaner
Origin: well, I have all my teeth. I have no fillings. You may ask, "Why, pray tell "M", do you have denture cleaner?!" Well, lemme tell you. At first I was stumped as well. But then I remembered my mouthgaurd for teeth grinding. My dentist gave me these samples
How long kept? Ugh I got the guard 10 years ago and I haven't worn it (or needed it) for about 6-7 (yay me)
Why kept: I have purged this drawer numerous times my question is how did this escape the purge?? (Out of sight)
Destination: trash

Guest Post: Not what it's cracked up to be

From our intrepid correspondent in Beacon, "S":

Part of a set of 4 (Russell Wright reproductions, a gift that I have had maybe 5 years?): one decent sized coffee mug that is perfect for sipping on the deck (seen here). Somehow this acquired a hairline fracture (no, it wasn't my hair--I checked) and so no longer can be filled with my Cafe Bustelo. This type of item is VERY sticky for me--I could still use it to scoop birdseed out of the bag, or for mulch in the yard. But I actually do have real scoops and shovels for that kind of thing. So, this is your last moment with me on the deck--now I am making you walk the plank and into the garbage bag. Collection day is today!

Annoyingly Rewarding

What:  $12 in Staples coupons.
Origin:  Erroneous belief that I'd get an actual rebate for recycling my inkjet cartridges.
How long kept:  Not too long, actually.   The one that expires today just arrived weeks ago.   The other, maybe last month?
Why kept:  It's Worth Money.
Destination:  Staples, converted into printer paper.

Confession/Rant:   Perhaps I wasn't using my listening skills:  I thought that the Staples employee who convinced me to sign up for Staples Rewards program used the word "rebate".

My understanding of the definition of "rebate" involves receiving an actual check.   This "rebate" can only be used at Staples.   Annoying.   Not because I don't shop there -- heckfire, it's the only game in town.   There aren't any non-big box stationery stores left.

But because they have just given me another job...to hang onto the fracking (heh heh, I've been watching Battlestar Galactica on DVD) little pieces of paper and make sure that I have them in hand the next time I visit.

I'd prefer to go back to recycling my cartridges for the good karma points I used to get when HP let you mail them in.   You don't need to participate in any program to drop the cartridges at Staples, and I'm going to revert to just dropping them off, shred my rewards card, and "blog" my participation in Staples program.

"Reward" programs like this fall into the same category, in my mind, as stored value cards.   (With the added twist that we're effectively selling them our data about what we buy.)    Part of the business model is that all of this "money" will not actually be claimed.

They're a trap.

How long kept: A couple of weeks, in its current, packaged form. (The wrist strap itself? Probably 2 years.) When it came back, threw it into my filing pile. (Give me an "F" in GTD!)
Why kept: The wrist strap MUST be reunited with the iPod case. It Might Be Useful. And Aaargh.
Destination: "M."

Confession: The new package looks like it's being mailed by a mad bomber. I recycled a padded mailer I'd been saving (It Was Useful!), and took this opportunity to use some old non-44 cent stamps.

Confession, cont: I mentioned this item in an earlier post, but don't think it was the main event...thus I don't believe that "M" can ding me for posting the same item twice.

"S," you add another data point: it would seem for these mugs to be truly "green" that they should be made to be dishwasher safe. They sure aren't recyclable, at least not in NYC. Sigh.

Why kept: Maybe a friend would visit, and They Might Be Useful. Or maybe I'd go back, and I Might Need Them. And, Nostalgia.
Destination: Recycling. I doubt that many of the insights for travelers of the last century are relevant and valid to anyone today.

Confession: I saved my China guidebook. Some of my nephews are Chinese-American, and if they turn out to be the kind of nerds I was as a kid, this is the kind of "antique" book they might like to look at. Aargh.

Confession, part deux: I've been a little under the weather. In addition to living in the past with my guidebooks, this was yesterday's post.

Labeled for the circular file (Wednesday's post)

What: labels for hot cocoa mix we gave as gifts 2+ years ago and an empty box from note cards
Why kept: the labels-we may need them if we make hot cocoa mix again and I didn't know the box was empty -- storage boxes (well baskets) are evil
Destination: recycle

Glossing over my tears (Tuesday's post)

What: two lip glosses and expired tears
Last used: lip glosses over 5 years and tears used in 2009
Origin: I thought eeeww when I started to remember when I purchased the lip gloss. I thought, "That will never meet my lips again!!"
Destination: garbage

I don't wear lip stick or lip gloss with color. I never learned how to properly. I'm a lip balm girl and use it when my lips are chapped and it tends to go well past my lip lines -- thus why clear is a necessity. My fav is C O Bigelow Mentha lip shine. Love it!!

I bought some new tears -- optive. They are so soothing

Guarantees Have Expired

What:  Guarantees and user manuals for stuff I no longer own.
Origin:  Files were a result of a GTD seizure, circa 2007?
Last used:  Monday, I checked for the paperwork for the donated Crock Pot.
Why kept:   I might need to know how to operate one of my appliances, thus They Might Be Useful; I Might Need Them.
Destination:  Recycling.

Confession:  I neglected to check the files when blogging the Discman, various computers, and the flippin' meditation clock

I believe that the GTD methodology calls for regular file checks to see what you can release, so color me "done" on this one.

Why kept: It's Perfectly Good. I Might Need it. And, of course, It Might Be Useful.  (It still works perfectly.)
Destination: Housing Works, in what I think is the last of the b-school branded totes.

Confession: I last thought about using this when a friend told me that she had been making yogurt in her crock pot some time last year.   But I recently learned how to make yogurt using nothing more complicated than a stove, thermometer and 1 quart jar.   (I'm in crunchy hippie heaven, even though it's not my demographic.)

Time to let this go. Thanks, Mom, I loved all of the soups and various one pot meals I used to make in this!  (Nostalgia.)

Guest Post from "S": Irreverent and Irrelevant

"This guide to New Orleans was to prepare for a trip with a guy in April 1996. I've kept it like most of my guide books, for sentimental/maybe practical reasons. All that is left of the guy I knew and the city I visited is sentiment, and photos. I don't need the book. Maybe I'll send it to the George W. Bush Library for Oxymorons."

Why kept: I don't know.   Mostly Out of Sight, Out of Mind.
Destination: Compost.

Confession: I never think that there's anything all that old in my refrigerator. After all, I hardly cook. Further, I've purged since the beginning of this project. (And another time before that only a few months earlier, when I got a new refrigerator.) And everything that goes into the fridge gets marked with a date -- I keep a Sharpie on my refrigerator door to reinforce this habit.  Hmmm.

My fear:   is it possible that I might have reasoned that capers last forever, and that They Were Perfectly Good?  More acceptable possibility, that the label on the jar was dark in color, and I misread the date.

Confession, continued: I also found several other expired items. December 2009 (a few tablespoons of soy sauce), and March 2010 (apricot jam).

Bonus: I took the opportunity to wipe down all of the shelves and get rid of some other borderline items that I realized did not fall into the Might Be Useful category.

Confession, P.S.: I kept the jam.

I'm sensing an almond butter and apricot jam sandwich in my near future.

I actually liked hanging it around the holidays, since I am a Christmas minimalist. But it will have a new home, come July. That is when I decided to have my new venue for some of my cast-offs: a tag sale called "Two Buck or I Chuck!" Everything will cost $2 or under. Leftovers go to Goodwill. Origin: I love Elmore, particularly his dialogue.
How long kept: Ack, some probably since the 80s. They're yellowing! Last read? Gulp.
Why kept: Because I love Elmore, maybe I thought I'd read them again? Thus They Might Be Useful. Also, some sense of my own identity. I can't be a total egghead and "heart" a writer like Elmore Leonard.
Destination: Housing Works.

Confession: I've reasoned that I can buy them back for a dollar each if I miss them.

Confession, part deux: I saved my two favorites, Get Shorty and Out of Sight. I Might Need Them!

Confession, cont:  I was inspired to lose this little collection by a Peter D. Kramer book review in the NY Times about a new book called Stuff:   Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things, by Randy O. Frost and Gail Steketee.   The opening:
"Working with a patient he calls Debra, a compulsive hoarder, the psychologist Randy O. Frost tried a simple experiment. Frost proposed sending Debra a postcard, blank but for the name and address. Debra’s assignment was to throw it away.

Days later, Debra complained that she had not had enough time with the card. She described the stamp and the postmark. When she finally let go, she pictured the card’s position in the trash. Later, she confessed she had cheated by writing down everything about the card she could remember and then saving the notes."
Part of me says, hmmm.   What's up in our culture with the stream of stories in popular culture about "hoarders"?    How often does someone like me, with an inclination to own the 5 extra Elmore Leonard books or "stash" of fabric, develop attachment at a level that might garner Oprah's attention?

The other part of me says, Aargh!  (And, what can I get rid of next?)

Why kept: Nostalgia. (See confession.)
Destination: The salts, down the drain. The bottle? Not sure yet.

Confession: A good friend made these bath salts as a gift...I've kept them in my cabinet for an age beyond their useful life because they remind me of her. But they aren't my friend! And they really aren't useful now that they're unscented.

P.S./Bonus:   Since the salts were stuck in the bottle, I poured in some hot water.   Surprise, the lavender scent re-emerged, and I decided to pour everything into a little tub for impromptu foot soak!   So, They Were Useful!

Inspiring.... (Friday's post)

Guest Post: Green Bagging it for Earth Day

"A fuzzy, scratchy bag that contained gifties from a friend, long ago used and enjoyed. As a tote, it is tote-ally cute. But not too practical, as I tend to tote a lot when tote I must. So, into the mystery collection of things that will be part of Something. Bigger. Than. Goodwill."

How long kept: I think I got this around Christmas of 2006, and have used it almost daily.
Why kept: It was green, so Might Be Useful. (And until recently, it was Perfectly Good. See confession.)
Destination: Sadly, trash.

Confession: I believe that any dish that can be washed is dishwasher safe, otherwise it does not live in my house. Recently, the seal on the outside of the cup was compromised -- probably due to the dishwasher -- and water leaked into the space that made this cup "thermal".

Confession part deux: I probably would have kept using this cup. Heckfire, It Was Perfectly Good! But out of the blue, the good people at my Starbucks gave me a new cup one day last week, as a gift. They were very excited, and it made my day.

Confession, cont: I was actually thinking of replacing this cup with a metal cup. Both on the dishwasher safety angle, and trying to eliminate plastics from my life. But then I'd never be able to return to this Starbucks again.

As I believe the Dalai Lama says, when you're a guest in someone's home, it's better to eat meat than to refuse it on grounds of vegetarianism and offend your hosts. It looks like I'm signing up for 4 years of plastic.

Bonus: It's a nice cup! It's green -- and I don't mean all "earthy and granola" green, but green in color.   And I don't think that this is a coincidence -- the young woman who spearheaded this gift told me that she couldn't wear red because of her religion. It turns out that she's a practitioner of Santeria.

Only in New York.

What: well loved slippers
Last used: just the other week
Why kept: they might be useful and out of sight (they slipped under my bed)
Destination: after picking up little piece of plastic, I decided it was time to retire this pair of slippers

Confession: I have three more pairs. Sometimes when I can find a matched pair, I just wear what I find. My favorite pair right now are a pair of ballet slipper type that have a jolly roger on them. They keep my socks dry after the Wonderdog drools her water all over the kitchen floor. Thanks Mom :)

Shake a (gate) leg (table)...

What: A gate leg table that is in need of refinishing
Origin: I had the hubby garbage pick in about 2005.  I learned later that we found it at a new friend at work's house.
Why Kept: It held our microwave for several years until we installed one over the stove. The hubby started to work on it, but we don't need it anymore. So we stored it in the garage. Out of site and I might fix it.
Destination: To my friend "L". She loves to refinish furniture and does it so well. It's really a nice piece of furniture. I'm sure she will make it beautiful and perhaps they will serve up some German Chocolate cake on this table. :D (Photo to follow -- it needs editing)

Annoyance Is Wrinking My Brow

What: A recently purchased, but expired, bottle of SPF 15 sunscreen meant for everyday use.
Origin: Desire to forestall the wrinking process.
Usage: Infrequent.
Why kept: Now that the weather is nicer and I'm out in the sun more frequently, thought I'd use it. Thus, It Might Be Useful.
Destination: Sunscreen, the NYC sewage system. Bottle, recycling.

Confession/Rant: I prefer to shop my local family-owned pharmacy, Kings. I strayed. I'm fairly certain that I purchased this at Duane Reade, in October or November. (And Duane Reade earns another demerit in my book, for selling nearly-expired goods.)

Guest Post: "Before the internet, there was..."

"...this charming book that I bought at the Metropolitan Museum, for entering all those numbers that you need from time to time (the florist, the car service, the pet sitter). You know, before the iPhone. This book is old enough not to have entry spaces for cell or fax numbers, or e-mail addresses, so you do the math. I still like doing things the old fashioned way, but this was just collecting dust. And I had only filled in about 5 numbers. I have a new category for dispensing this stuff, to be revealed at a later date. Let's just say it's going into a bag in the garage until mid-June."

We love a mystery, and will await the "reveal"! Thanks, "S."

This Baggage Does Not Compute

Not in my closet, at least!

What: Two laptop cases.
Origin: One, new job excitement. The other, grad school reunion swag.
How long kept: Reunion was in 2005. (And the new job was also circa 2005.)
Why kept: I Might Need Them. They Might Be Useful. They're Perfectly Good. And Out of Sight, Out of Mind.
Destination: Housing Works

Confession: These bags have been hanging on a hook in my closet for years. The reunion item is completely unused. The other one, I only used once. It was clearly designed by a man who has never traveled with a laptop -- it only opened at the top, kind of like a ziplock bag. Not user-friendly, if cute; not useful.

And the reunion item, I don't carry or wear much rah-rah school stuff at my age. And, uh, snarky note to the swag purchase committee, the fancier Land's End bags might actually wind up being useful and a bit more brand consistent! This one, not so much.

Destination: Shredder.

Confession: I started my business the summer of 2008 -- came back from an August holiday to find out that my (putative) first client was blowing up financial markets...or blowing up with them, depending on who's talking.

I kicked into an anxiety mode where making lists in a 4 square matrix seemed like an accomplishment.

Ech, there was some seriously bad moon rising chi in there that needed to go.

On top of that, when I look at a couple of things I tasked myself with doing for other people...at least one of my people choices looks, in hindsight, questionable to say the least.   Not in a criminal way!   But in the big giant energy suck way.   That one was balanced out, though, by some real princes. (And Princesses.)

Check out our favorite blogger from the Hudson Valley, "S"!

Ok, she's our only blogger from the HV, but as our first, she wins Favorite status.   As an artist, she manages to keep it real, while making every bit of stuff she releases look amazing.   By making her photos into a "set" on flickr, her posted items look (to me) like a quilt...it turns each little photo of an un-needed/unwanted item into a little jewel.

Check it out.

Origins: various. The powder I know was from the 90s
Last used: these shades of polish, probably the earlier part of this century. I tend to use more conservative colors, like the big apple red I'm getting on the keys here because I just painted my nails. I stay away from the blues, greens and purples now that I'm older
Why kept: out of sight, storage boxes are evil and I might need them. Last year I did use the blue and green to decorate my tootsies
Destination: sadly they are going in the trash

I hope I can get the red off my b, h, g and space bar tomorrow ( a q-tip and nail polish remover worked great!)

Update: My friend "Q" wanted them for her little one and we have 10 happy little piggies

I Read The News Today -- Not

What: Local Papers from a favorite spot.
Origin: Gift from Mom, desire to stay informed.
Usage/How Long Kept: I had a stack of these dating back to February, 2010, which I'm still going through.
Why Kept: They're Perfectly Good. I need to read them.
Destination: The papers in the photo are padding for the last package of items I've got at home for school kids in Afghanistan.  (The rest will be recycled, once read.)

Confession:   We've been sending supplies to girls and boys schools in Afghanistan, and someone donated a Backgammon board game;  the size of the game box was off just enough that I couldn't find the right mailing box.  The sweater I exchanged came back in basic black yesterday, in the perfect box -- bingo.

So this one is kind of a twofer, I've had the backgammon set for about 3 weeks. Hopefully this will be useful, I'm not sure if the kids play backgammon. (If not, maybe the Americans over there who are organizing this whole thing will.)

We also sent kites, which I understand the kids and families absolutely love. Much of the stuff we've sent so far this year is either still en route, or being staged for one big delivery to a remote town...I'm hearing that this may happen later this week.

Guest Post: Note to myself: Recycle these!

"I love little notepads. These were stashed in yesterday's toss--the organizer bin--a few blank pages left in them, along with 2 battered envelopes. They found themselves homeless, so I ripped out the blank pages to use for grocery lists (now in the kitchen drawer), and so, to recycling they are bound. And the office purge continues!"

More stylish shedding from "S"!

Feeling flakey

I have some mild guilt for tossing these but they are all a-crumbling

I have more guilt because I feel the need to blog something larger than earrings. That is my goal by the end of the week to blog something more substantial than earrings

Taxing My Patience

Taxing My Patience

What: My revenue and expense documentation for Q1 2010; stacks of receipts and invoices.
Origin: Desire to avoid extreme stress around tax prep in 2011.
How long kept: Oldest items, since 1/1/10. Most recent are only days old.
Why kept: Frugality, legality. This Might Be Useful for both. (And It Also Might Be Worth Something in the form of tax deductions.)
Destination: Moon. No, really to my new bookkeeping service, via priority mail.

Confession: If I were to make a practice of doing this for myself, it would probably take about 5 minutes a day. Many years of small business ownership have taught me that this is not bloody likely. Instead, I gather icky looking piles of wrinkled receipts into folders, and then ruminate endlessly about what I need to do with it...leading up to between 2 and 4 hellish days of procrastination and self-loathing as I sift and sort through the nightmarish, but semi-orderly, mess, and data-enter everything into a spreadsheet.

Enough. Sometimes the services of a professional are called for.

I don't fill my own teeth, either.

I am starting an art supply box for possible donation to a local community center, but not sure if this will be in it. One place it won't be is in my studio."

I Am A Material Girl

What:  About 5 yards of cantaloupe colored cotton fabric.
Origin:   I have no idea.
Usage/How Long Kept:   ?   Since the late 1980s or early 90s?
Why kept:  It was one of the baggage finds...Out Of Sight, Out of Mind.  Storage Boxes Are Evil.
Destination:  Freecycler "J".

Confession:   This actually went on Monday...I pre-posted it for Tuesday because I was prepared for what we call Freecycle Drama.

Bonus:  I didn't even think about keeping this for a moment!  And no Drama with "J"!   I had a lovely request from another "M".

On the other hand, one Freecycler asked me if I would drop this off for her.   Huh?   I resisted the urge to tell her that Freecycle does not have a concierge service...she must be new.

Both "J" and "M" were so polite, crisp and professional that I wished I had two large pieces of cantaloupe colored fabric to give away.
