What's this? I thought.

How long kept: Probably not all that long for two of them, since last fall. The other one? At least a year.
Why kept: Of course, I might have the impulse to cook and thus Might Need Them; They Might Be Useful.
Destination: Stovetop, baby.

Bonus: I threw in 1/3 cup of red quinoa I also had in there. Note to self -- to avoid multiple partially used bags of quinoa or indeterminate age, when you buy the 1 pound bags of quinoa, multiply the recipe to use it all at once.

Bonus, continued: I'm also tossing/recycling (as acceptable) the plastic containers they were stored in. I'm switching over to glass.

Confession: Why eew? I took a break from my certification exam to check facebook and found discussion about a delicious quinoa and avocado salad. Yum. With pumpkin seeds -- double bonus, since I had a partial container of those, too. Well, when I went to toast the pumpkin seeds, I found something, um, organic in it. Something that wasn't ever part of a pumpkin in any way that I'd like to commit to digital life. It didn't originate in my house, I bought it that way.

You know that there are lots of opportunities in the food chain for bad stuff to get into food. I accept some of that. But this one, grossed me out.

And, eew, it's going back...to Whole Foods.

Meanwhile, I substituted walnuts. (Also purchased at WF. I checked them carefully before toasting, you betcha. My local health food store's nuts are sometimes not fresh, so I justify the WF purchase. But eew, now where will I purchase nuts?)

This Bag's In The Bag

What:  A fabric bag meant for straining food, now pretty much worn out.
Origin:  A German friend brought this back from Europe and gave it to me, probably in 2002, for making almond milk.   (Yum, homemade almond milk is awesome.)
Usage/last used:   Frequently, until I deemed it past its useful life, probably several years ago.
Why kept:   Of course, Might Need It.   It Might Be Useful.
Destination:  Textile recycling.

Confession:   I have deemed one item that I'm allowed to keep in the house once it's been "blogged":  items destined for textile recycling.   I currently have to take myself up to Union Square Greenmarket to do this, and there are only a couple of days a week that they accept textiles   (I think my building is going to implement it soon, though.)

Confession, part deux:   Anyone else notice that one signal of something that must go is that you move it around a lot?   This has been in a kitchen cabinet for an age.  This was a very thick cheesecloth that I couldn't find anywhere here.   But quite some time back I discovered a great and readily available substitute, smaller bags meant for straining jelly.   Why I had to keep this?   I can only say, Aaargh.

Confession, cont:  I didn't post yesterday.   This might be my first miss.  Oh well.  I'm working on a professional certification test (take home) this weekend, and I was focused on getting that in good shape.   Sometimes, something has to give.    The good news is that when I'm done with the test, I'll have a bunch of obsolete notes from old courses to "blog."   (I actually did scrap some extraneous stuff yesterday.   Sigh.)

There's An App For It: Project 365

One of the top photography apps for the iPhone is called Project 365.

I might just heart Alvin Yu, the guy who designed this app, which I'll download and report back on.    Here's the quote he chose for his "about" page:
"In reality, all men are sculptors, constantly chipping away the unwanted parts of their lives trying to create a masterpiece.”

Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha: You've Been Cancelled (from my Closet)

What: Ginormous HBO Swag t-shirt.
Origin: Our bro knew someone who worked at HBO who gave him this (slightly) torn shirt.
How Long Kept: Since the late 90s.
Why kept: Uh, It Might Be Useful? If I were Carrie circa 1997, wearing it as a dress with a pair of cowboy boots and a patent leather belt...or if I were LeBron James.
Destination: Textile Recycling.

Confession: I checked ebay. Even if it weren't torn, it's not worth $9.99.

Confession, cont: I missed the first movie, and have no desire to see the second. I've netflixed the TV show a few times, and it has some nice Nostalgia value. But, for me, it does not translate to the present in so many ways...

It's A Fine Romance (Language), But It's Over

What:  Cassette language lesson tapes.
Origin:  French might have been a refresher before "M", Mom and I went to France in, uh, 1993?   Spanish, a trip to Mexico in 2001.   (See confession.)
Usage:  Not since 1993/2001.   Aargh!
Why kept:  I might need to parlez a little bit of espanol.   Thus, They Might Be Useful; I Might Need Them.
Destination:  Housing Works.

Confession:  I have a sneaking feeling that the Spanish tapes might have belonged to a bschool friend.   And the French tapes?   I was once pretty conversant in French.   In fact, I passed out of a year of French in college based on a written test, per my undergraduate institution this was considered fluent.   And I'll admit, I could still read all of the signs.   The tapes didn't make me feel any less tongue-tied in the face of the actual Parisians.

Confession, part deux:   You may have noticed a lot of things heading out the door to Housing Works...I was out of town for a conference, and I took them over in one garbage bag before I left.   Go ahead, call me a cheater.

Reflecting on the past 6 months

Boy, this has been so cool. I'm so glad "A" thought of this project. Although, looking at the "Kindred Spirits" page, we are not alone in our wish for a clutter free existance (well, less cluttered anyway). And we thought around February or March we would have to stretch to find things to blog.

The Hubby, Boy, Kid and I have gotten rid of many items over the past 6 months. Not all were "blogged" but we have been able to release at least one item a day since the start of the project. I think one of the best things that have come from this project is that The Boy has learned to let go of "sticky" items.

Truth be told, I'm not perfect. I know. That is a surprise to many of you! I have brought things into the house that I probably shouldn't have. But you know what? They are fewer and farther inbetween because of this project. Did I need the gold chargers for underneath the china we rarely use? Nope. Have I wanted them for a very long time? YES. (Thanks to my friend "L" for sharing them with me from her garage sale!) Do they make me happy? YES Now my goal is to use my china at least once a month. Anyway, I digress.
Happy 6 Month anniversary, 365 Things!!!

I'm Not Waiting For The Weekend Any More

What:   A stack of books, some unread (see confession) others will never be read again.
Origin:   If you haven't noticed, I love to read!
How long kept:   Newest is about 2 years old, Madame Bovary was an annoying read about people I didn't care about.  Waiting for the Weekend, 1992?  (Ack, see confession.)
Why kept:   Might read them or might read them again, and thus They Might Be Useful.   As noted before, some have a Nostalgia component.
Destination:  My NYPL branch.   They're taking books again!

Confession:   Yeah, I probably read a review of Waiting for The Weekend in the NY Times weekend book review (I'm guessing) and bought it.   Never did get around to reading it.   I even took it off the shelf several weeks ago to see if I'd feel inspired to read it.   Not so much.   Aargh.

Guest Post: Soul-searching...and they gotta go

"Old 45s (not mine, but they could've been) the result of my saying "Sure, I'll take them" when someone else was trying to unload a whole bag of two dozen. I'm such a sucker for potential crafty projects. Problem is, I'd need to be reincarnated several times as an etsy shopkeeper fanatic in order to finish all the projects I've started. This one didn't actually start, in terms of mess. I nipped it in the bud, and am offering them all up at the "2-buck or I chuck" yard sale later this summer. There are some great old graphics, like Stax-Volt. They'd make cool, um, coasters?"

This Can't Be Jarring

What: A Good Jar.
Origin:   Pickle consumption.
How long kept:  The pickles, ugh, they were in my refrigerator for a very long time.   Not 5 years, but not 5 months.   I composted them quite some time ago.
Why kept:   I'm re-using jars to replace tupperware, for example to store rice.   It Might Be Useful.   But I couldn't get the pickle scent out of the jar -- well, actually it was the cover.   See confession.
Destination:  Recycling.

Confession:  I tried everything.  I ran it through the dishwasher umpteen times.  I threw some baking soda in the jar and left it there for a few days -- twice, once with the jar upside down (and baking soda thus in the lid.)   Followed by yet another ride through the dishwasher.   No dice.

Too high maintenance, off to the compactor room.

I Am Runneth Over -- With Cups

What:   Melamine Cups.
Origin:   Tag sale awesomeness.   (For "M" and friends, that's what we call garage sales out here in the East.)
Usage/How Long Kept:   Aargh.   I'm guessing that I got these in the 90s.   But it could have been the late 80s.   (Can I say it again?  Aargh!)
Why kept:   Out of Sight, Out of Mind.   And, what I think is for my first deployment of S/PDX's status, They're Cool and Vintage.
Destination:  Housing Works.

Confession:   They may be cool and vintage, but you can't even give them away on eBay -- I checked this about a year ago when I cleaned them out of a cabinet, and again before attempting to Freecycle them Mother's Day weekend.   I got only one response, from someone who wanted me to send a photo:   I deemed her to be too high maintenance, and a possible source of Freecycle Drama, and went with donation as the lower energy option.

Confession, cont:  I had the notion of making them into cute crafty pincushions stuck in my head until they were gone.   Proof positive that I'm reading too many craft magazines.

(And before they went, I reasoned that if I ever actually wanted to do this, I could buy them from an eBay seller pretty much any time.)

What:  Borrowed Books.
Origin:  Travel reading.
How long kept/Usage:   Longest?  Fellowship of the Rings, since probably 1999.   Others date to early this year.  For usage, see confession.
Why kept:  Inertia.   And like other books I've surrounded myself with, they kind of became invisible, so Out Of Sight, Out of Mind.
Destination:  Return to Lender, via USPS.

Confession:  I kept Fellowship of the Rings because I might read it, and thus It Might Be Useful.   True or false:  Tolkien is mostly for adolescent and post-adolescent boys?   I finally choked down The Hobbit in the late 90s, but never managed any of the others.   (And I haven't seen Lord of the Rings movies based on a personal rule:  I refuse to see films that last more than 120 minutes.)

Confession part deux:   These are going back to Mom.   I feel that since they already belong to her, our ordinary rule excluding items given to Mom does not apply:   I'm not generating new stuff in Mom's life, I'm merely putting something back on the right shelf.

The shelf that is not in my house.

Digression:   My first job after college was working in a residential drug and alcohol treatment center for adolescents.   The kids, who were great and by now hopefully all living good, sober middle-aged* lives, used "to book" as a verb.   It meant, decamping from treatment without authorization or having completed treatment.   I never got that.  From time to time, I hear, "Gotta book," when someone (usually a fictional character) is talking about leaving rapidly.   Hmmm.

*Question:   Is Gen-Y middle aged yet?

"I have a sizable tie collection. I am trying to weed it out, starting with this (which had been my grandfather's but not a classic keeper). Well, in fact, I DID keep it for over 30 years, since I inherited all his ties around 1978; when I decided Annie Hall was my alter ego he gladly gave them to me and I even learned how to tie the knot. This looks a little too school boy, so I think I will pass it along to that tag sale bag that is growing."

Thanks so much "S". I don't think I've ever shared the existence of my own tie collection with you. We all have the same stuff!

Number 5, Number 5, Number 5

What: Single use food containers.
Origin: Doggie bags from friends and family. (See confession.)
How long kept: Oldest one might date back to January, 2009. Or 2008? Newest, since Sunday.
Why kept: They might be storing something, or be sitting in my extremely spacious kitchen cabinet waiting to store something: They Might Be Useful.
Destination: They recycle number 5 plastic at Whole Foods.

Confession: I think that one of these contained birthday cake that I carried back to NYC from Chicago. Maybe this year. My birthday was in January. Aargh.

Confession, cont.: Sorry, neighborhood health food store -- the Big Box Behemoth wins this round.
